Discount dental plans have, for decades, been on the fringes of the benefits world, existing as an individual product almost exclusively. But as employers continue to shift costs, move to consumer-driven health plans and, in some cases, discontinue dental coverage altogether, voluntary discount dental plans could be poised for growth.

The trade off is lower benefits in the form of fixed reimbursements, instead of coverage based on a percentage of usual fees. Worksite plans generally have waiting periods of three to 12 months for Type II (restorations) and Type III treatments (crowns, root canals, dentures). The consumer will have higher out-of-pocket costs with indemnity plans.
